Please note: At the present time, we are not able to provide SOS Feeding Therapy. Please do still contact us, as we may be able to incorporate feeding into a Sensory Integration program.

At Jump Start Therapy, we have therapists who have expertise helping families who have children with feeding difficulties and fussy eaters.  She has been trained to use the SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach, which is a multi-disciplinary programme for assessing and managing children with feeding and weight/growth difficulties, usually focusing on the early years.

The approach has developed over the past 20 years through the clinical work of Dr. Kay Toomey, physicians, occupational therapists, speech therapists and dieticians.   This programme integrates perceptual, motor, oral, learning, medical and nutritional factors to treat children with feeding/growth problems. It is based on research regarding the steps, stages, and skills of feeding necessary for good growth in childhood.

The program is an effective way to address problematic feeding behaviours in a variety of settings. It helps children to interact with food in a playful, non stressful way, to help increase a child’s comfort level.  Initially we need to assess a child and make sure that all physical reasons for atypical feeding development have been examined and appropriately medically treated, as well as identifying any nutritional deficits and how to correct them as appropriate to each individual child’s growth parameters and needs.

At Jump Start we devise a feeding therapy treatment plan for your child, and set a routine at the initiation of each meal or snack to help feeding to take place.  The child becomes exposed to more types of foods as treatment progresses.  We aim to increase the range of textures, smells, sizes, shapes and colours of foods.

Parents and carers will be involved in treatment and will learn the principles of the Feeding Program.

The goals we aim for include – children readily trying new foods, and child being able to eat food appropriate for their age, without gagging, vomiting or battling with their parents.
